In this sweeping panorama, Jasper Cropsey (1823-1900) encompasses the hills of Staten Island, the planted fields of the Vanderbilt Estate in the middle distance, and the ocean beyond. Cropsey, born in Rossville, is considered one of the most important second generation Hudson River School painters.
